FLASH #22 – THE INTENSITY OF AUDITIONS<\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s that time of the year again at JBA: not Christmas (although that\u2019s just around the corner)
but the heightened sense of excitement and urgency which our second year graduates are starting to feel: the time for them to test their wings and leave the JBA nest is close by. They are, together with their coaches, teachers and directors in the midst of preparing their portfolios which they will soon be sending out to many dance companies in Europe and beyond. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the new year approaches, these companies will be on the look out for new talent to fill vacancies in their ranks; they send out notices – online or in print – of who and what they need in the season to come, and the dancers search diligently to find the most suitable to their talents.<\/p>\n<\/div>

Maja, Liz\u00e9, James, Seohyun, Sora, Letizia<\/strong> and Ella<\/strong> will come 2025, close the door on their training years with JBA and hopefully dance their way into professional companies and onto new stages.
It was refreshing to find out how intelligently they approached this all-important step and how level-headed these young are – no \u2018stars in their eyes\u2019 but a realization that the dance world isn\u2019t just waiting with open arms – it\u2019s up to each of them to make it happen. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this they are helped tirelessly by Alain<\/strong> and Altea<\/strong>; the choosing of dance variations (both classical and contemporary) in order to show them at their best is only a start. These will have to be captured on film and included, together with individual photos in each portfolio.
Before this however, came hours of fine-tuning, rehearsing with Altea, and later with Monique Loudi\u00e8res<\/strong> and Christiane Marchant<\/strong> giving their own expert advice during workshops in the studio. As each dancer has an individual style, a great deal of thought goes into making the best choices as companies can be demanding, asking to see many varied aspects of dance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maja<\/strong>: \u201cI wanted to work on a solo which would highlight a different side to my dancing to that of pure classwork\u201d.  James<\/strong> took the same approach – he wished to show the artistic variety in both classical and contemporary styles. Sora<\/strong> and Letizia<\/strong> both really enjoyed the filming – the ability to express the emotions they feel when dancing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It entails hours of painstaking work; Alain behind the camera and Altea with her eye for detail vetting each movement or pose. When it came to the still shots they turned to Nicha<\/strong> Rodboon<\/strong>, soloist dancer with Opera Ballet Flanders and professional photographer. The group agreed that Nicha with her dancer\u2019s background was able to help them enormously.
As for the next step; they now send their completed resum\u00e9s off, hoping that these don\u2019t land in any company\u2019s spam mail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maja<\/strong> remarked how helpful it would be – saving the dancers\u2019 both time and money – if the audition advertisements, or even the company websites, contained more detailed information as to what artistic directors were really looking for. Aspirants now have to log up many hours of traveling (which entails costs) in order to present themselves in person. 
Letizia<\/strong>: \u201cOnce there, we just have to dance as best as we know how, to be true to ourselves and to understand that if you aren\u2019t accepted it\u2019s not because you\u2019re a bad dancer. Directors, like choreographers are all looking for different qualities and you might just be the one to fit the bill\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We wish them all the best of luck wherever their own personal \u2018journey\u2019 leads. We\u2019re proud of them, not only as dancers but as the mature responsible people they have become in their time with JBA. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
