Abbie Beresford-Wong
After living in Malta, where she started dancing at the young age of 3, it was in the UK where she first began training at a local ballet school. At the same time, during the weekends, she took part in the Associate program of the Royal Ballet School. When her family moved to Sydney, Australia Abbie trained professionally there for two years at the Tanya Pearson Academy before finally joining Junior Ballet Antwerp.
Abbie: “I chose JBA firstly because of the way they work with their dancers, which made me feel very at home. During the audition I was drawn to the repertoire and styles we experienced which I felt aligned with my own, yet still offered challenges. I am excited to use my time at JBA to really explore and find out what I am capable of. I want to be challenged by the styles of different choreographers and to experience what it is like to be part of a professional company, all the while still learning from the people around me.”
With no particular dream company in mind, she hopes to find one whose repertoire will suit and stimulate her. She loves dancing classical and neoclassical ballet and feels particularly drawn to the work of William Forsythe. Abbie also greatly admires George Balanchine’s style of choreography, with its musicality and demanding, speedy footwork.
‘Manon’ by Kenneth MacMillan is one of her most-loved ballets because of the emotion expressed in the movement and how the story is embodied in the music.
Outside of dance Abbie enjoys listening to music, traveling, walking and exploring new places.
