Haruka Kawamura

Haruka is Japanese and was born and grew up in Hong Kong. She started ballet at age 4 before training seriously at the Hong Kong Ballet Academy. At age 16 she received an audition offer from the Central School of Ballet in the UK, where she graduated when she was 19.

Haruka: “I was drawn to JBA’s rich and diverse repertoire – which includes classical, modern and contemporary ballet and is similar to that of a professional ballet company. I saw how many JBA graduates have gone on to join wonderful companies around the world and this made me confident it would provide the ideal environment from which to launch my own career.

The warm, welcoming atmosphere from teachers and staff at the audition was the best audition experience I ever had and was ultimately the deciding factor for me, I felt this is where I belong.”

Over the next two years she hopes to further refine her expression and artistry and to be challenged with new repertoire: to grow as dancer and as a person. 

Haruka also has her goals set to one day dance with major companies such as the Royal Swedish Ballet, Semperoper Ballett, Dresden or San Francisco Ballet.

She admires the works by George Balanchine and Kenneth MacMillan and loves the latter’s Manon and Romeo & Juliet in particular because she feels the choreography goes beyond technique, creating sheer artistry through emotional depth.

Outside of the dance studio, Haruka enjoys cooking, drawing and listening to all kinds of music.
